The enigmatic numbers on Magydus' coinage
Lot 2611
PAMPHYLIA. Magydus. Hadrian, 117-138. Assarion (Bronze, 21 mm, 6.30 g, 6 h). ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΜΑΓΥΔЄⲰΝ - ΙΗ Athena standing front, head to left, holding Nike in her right hand and spear in her left; to lower left, snake; to lower right, shield. RPC III online 2685.3 (this coin). SNG Paris 303. Rare. About very fine.

From the collection of Eric ten Brink, ex Naumann E-Auction 61, 7 January 2018, 473 corr. (misdescribed as Tyana).

The meaning of the numeral ΙΗ = 18 on the reverse of this coin is unknown. It is not a date according to a city era, for while 14, 15 and 16 occur under Trajan and 17 and 18 under Hadrian, the numbers keep climbing much slower under later emperors, eventually reaching 42 under Gallienus. The lowest recorded number, on the other hand, is 12 under Domitian.
